Use these tactics to transition blog readers into website visitors – and prospects for your business
By Roger Pierce, Small Business Expert
I’ve always believed it’s dangerous to weave sales messages into your blog.
It’s simply too early in the relationship to start selling – just because someone reads your blog doesn’t mean they are ready to buy from you. Any aggressive sales messages may turn off readers who otherwise are enjoying your wonderful blog content.
Think of your blog as a casual conversation. It’s where people can get to know you and your business. It’s where you build trust with them. Once a reader feels comfortable enough, he or she will make their way to your website where the selling process takes over.
So, how do you transition a blog reader into a website visitor? By offering an easy-to-do/no commitment next step designed to engage the reader with your business. Here some examples of next steps you can use at the end of your blog:
- “Click here to download our free template.” [goes to landing page on your website]
- “Enjoy more tips in our monthly newsletter. Subscribe here.”
- “Listen to what our customers say.” [link to testimonials page on your website]
- “Get your free 30-day trial today. Sign up here.”
- “Book a 15-minute online demo.”
- “Ask us a question anytime! Click here to leave your comment.”
Notice that none of these next steps are “buy now” messages. People will be asked to make a purchase once they are on your website.
You may insert any of these “call to action” lines at the end of your blog article. Or, scatter them strategically throughout the blog content without being obtrusive. You may prefer to simply embed links to keywords within your blog to take readers to website landing pages for product information, demo scheduling, or customer testimonials.
Understand some readers may consume months’ worth of blogs before they feel comfortable enough taking a next step with your business. Other readers may read your blog and be ready to immediately check out what you’re selling.
